Madrid is the capital of Spain with all the atmosphere of a major European city. At 2,100 ft, it is the highest capital city in Europe. Home to 3 million people, it is full of cafes, bars and some of the finest shops in Europe. It is located almost in the centre of Spain, the Puerta del Sol, in the middle of Madrid, is the point from which all Spain's radial highways begin. In the central area of Puerta del Sol is the famous bear statue, based on Madrid's coat of arms.
The countryside around the region remains virtually the same as it was when Cervantes romantic hero, Don Quixote, rode La Mancha back in 1603.
