Coloured plains and rugged mountains Castille is made up ot the provinces of Castille and Leon, which were united in 1037. The area became rich in the 16th century due to the produce of the New World. Many splendid religious buildings were constructed during this period. Rioja, a province in its own right, is Spain's most famous wine growing region.
Avila is 1,131 metres above sea level, the highest provincial capital in Spain.
